The Dome, the London Eye and the River of Fire were celebrated nationally but our Millennium Party and Riverside Firework Display will be remembered by the families and members attending, as the way to start this special New Year. Young and old enjoyed good food, good sound and super entertainment in the HQ.
The Beavers attended a “Bonanza” at Chalfont Heights where they enjoyed games and a display of falconry. All sections are working on ways to commemorate this year. The Scout Movement’s “Big Camp” was celebrated in May with The Third well represented at Chalfont Heights. The Cub Scouts camped at Lees Wood and the Venture Unit had a week sailing on the Norfolk Broads.
In July as a Group we celebrated 25 Years of camping at Crickhowell in Wales, all under canvas and cooking in traditional camp style. This site has almost become our second home as we visit it once or twice a year. The Troop camp held there this year was agreed by all, as one of the most successful in recent years. The Service Crew hold their annual Spring Camp there regularly. It is very much “back to nature” in this beautiful countryside and the only change over the years has been the recent addition of a well-hidden flush toilet. A Group newsletter has been started to record our adventures and achievements as they happen. It is also 50 years since we purchased our HQ site. It is now our intention to improve the facilities in the building, and all our fund raising efforts will be concentrated on this for the immediate future.
Charlotte Sell represented us at Westminster on National Scout Day and the Venture Unit won at the District Sports bay. Peter Yarnell and Hazel Furnell achieved their Queen Scout Awards. Our boating activities continue to flourish on site and away, with full use of all small craft that can be transported on our trailers. Matthew Durbin took part in The Tall Ships Race.
The Third sail on to meet the challenges ahead. Change is afoot with “Vision for the Future” destined to alter age grouping and uniform once again.
