In 2013 JK and I were honoured to receive the Stephen Tibble Award. Steve Tibble was a Sea Scout with 3rd Osterley, went on to become a Venture Scout and subsequently became a Scout Leader with 3rd Osterley. He then trained to become a police officer in the early 1970s.
On the 12th August, J and I travelled to London to lay flowers at the memorial of PC Stephen Tibble who was shot dead, whilst off-duty, confronting an IRA terrorist. The memorial commemorates Steve’s bravery and is situated where he fell on the 26th February 1975. After paying our respects we then made our way to the Tower of London to see the ceramic poppy display, a memorial to all the soldiers that fell defending Britain in the First World War. There is a ceramic poppy there for every soldier and the sheer number of poppies really hits home on the huge number of young men that gave their lives. Many boys, as young as 14 lied about their age and went off to fight as soldiers in the trenches. By the time the art instillation is completed in November this year, nearly 900,000 poppies will be on display, each one representing the life of a soldier that gave his life in the Great War.
